Stronghold Games






If you have ever listened to a board gaming podcast, you will have probebly have listen to President of Stronghold Games Mr Stephen Buonocore at some point. Why because he is a podcaster? No because he is a publisher of some awesome games and likes to talk about them... A LOT ;0)

Here is a little about him for the Stronghold games website:

Born and raised in New York and now from Somerset, NJ USA, Stephen had dreamed of entering the board game industry in some bigger fashion. A gamer since childhood (and there are many many years between then and now), Stephen has serious game geek cred, which includes playing RPGs since the late ‘70s, playing and running LARPS during the ‘90s and ‘00s, playing computer games and MMOs throughout the ‘80s, ‘90s, and ‘00s, playing CCGs from their inception through the early 00’s, and finally diving deeply into designer board games during the ‘00s. He has also playtested games for several major publishers in the industry.

Stephen organizes several gaming groups, including very regularly scheduled small/medium-sized groups, as well as a very large group that could almost be called a “mini-convention”. Stephen is mostly passionate about heavily thematic, American-style boardgames. Stephen’s geekiness doesn’t stop at gaming, however. Stephen is also a fan of Sci Fi and fantasy, and an avid beer brewer.

In late 2009, Stephen Buonocore and Kevin Nesbitt came together to discuss collaboration on a new board game publishing company. At the first meeting on October 25, 2009 in Atlantic City, NJ USA, a mission was established and plans were set in motion to start Stronghold Games.

The first publications by Stronghold Games in 2010, “Code 777″ and “Survive: Escape From Atlantis!” were extremely well-received, and these titles set the course for the company, showing the firm’s ability to bring great, high-quality games to market on a consistent basis. “Survive!” was one of the best selling games in the hobby board game market in 1Q’2012, per ICV2.com, an industry watchdog site.

The 2011 release of “Confusion: Espionage and Deception” set a new high-water mark for quality components. “Confusion” was not only hailed for its amazing acrylic game pieces, but its fantastic game play has garnered this game awards from MTV-Geek (“Game of the Year”) and Games Magazine (“Best Abstract of the Year”).

In February 2012, Kevin Nesbitt left Stronghold Games. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors inside or outside of the game industry.

Scott is back for a live Q&A

We are excited to announce that this weeks guest on #boardgamersask is none other than Prof. Scott Nicholson. Last November Scott took part in a non live version of the event, where people submitted questions to us and he answered via a video (See Below)

Want to know more about Scott...

Most of you will have heard of Scott from either his Youtube series Board Games with Scott or from his stint being the third chair (not a derogatory term) on the podcast On Board Games. What you might not know is that Scott is an Associate Professor at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University and the director of the Because Play Matters game lab. He is a leading light in the world of meaningful gamification.

"That is not enough" you say! Well he is also the designer of two wonderful games!

Going, Going, GONE!

In Going, Going, GONE!, players try to win items by bidding on five simultaneous auctions while the Auctioneer counts down from 10 to 1! Players bid on these five simultaneous auctions by physically dropping their wooden cubes (known as "Bucks") into any or all of the five transparent Auction Cups, each of which represents an auction for one or two Item Cards.
At the end of the countdown, the Auctioneer says "GONE!" and quickly places the Auction Paddle over the five Auction Cups to close the auctions. The player who has the most Bucks in each Auction Cup wins that auction and takes the Item Cards for that auction. Collections of items may be sold throughout the game for more Bucks, or players can keep building their collections to sell them at the end of the game. The player with the most Bucks at the end of the game wins!
Going, Going, GONE! is a simple-to-learn, exciting and unique game for players of all skill levels! It is ideal for playing in public spaces. Since the players control the pacing of the game and the variants used, the game adapts to the playing style of the players.

Tulipmania 1637
The tulip, a flower native to central Asia, created quite a ruckus upon reaching the shores of Europe in the mid-1500s. When a virus attacks a tulip, the resulting colour patterns can be stunning, but the same virus weakens the tulip and makes reproduction a challenge. These rare tulips have always been quite expensive, even to this day. Many associate Tulipmania with these rare, high-priced tulips, but scholars report that this first bubble market, where buyers pay far more than something is physically worth because of the resale value, actually stemmed from the common tulip market over December 1636 and January 1637.

The Dutch, well-known for their trading prowess, were the centre of the tulip trade. During this time, the bubonic plague was killing off 1 out of every 7 people per year, so the common man saw little reason not to invest foolishly with a chance of making a substantial profit. These conditions created a situation where the prices of tulips skyrocketed by the day, until the prices hit a point that could not be sustained. The wily investors knew when to sell off, so those who profited most are those who sold just as the market started to turn sour.
You are playing one of those wily investors. You have a network of buyers and colleagues, all of whom are also trying to become wealthy. Your goal is to make smart investments, artificially raise prices, fleece your network at the best time, and then make your escape from Tulipmania with the most money.
