board games now blind accessible

There are so many great board games released every year that, for most people, the choice is almost limitless. Unfortunately that is not the case for everyone. People with visual impairments have little to no options when it comes to being part of the board game hobby. 64 Oz Games want to change this by making board games accessible to the blind.

My wife and I both work with and have many friends who are visually impaired. We are passionate about board games and want to make this brilliant hobby accessible to more people. If our campaign is successful we will start producing a new line of products that would add accessibility to existing board and card games. These accessibility kits would be add-ons to games that would allow both blind and sighted players to play together. ” – Richard Gibbs, 64 Oz Games

It is no surprise that this campaign has already gathered the support of over twenty game publishers and the list is growing all the time. Official supporters of the campaign include: Plaid Hat Games, Portal Games, Rio Grande Games, Crash Games, Eagle Games - Gryphon Games, Game Salute & Gamelyn Games.

We are not just asking people to back our campaign because it is a good cause, we are offering backer rewards suitable for both blind and sighted players. Our game Yoink! Is a tactile micro-game that everyone can enjoy.” – Emily Gibbs, 64 Oz Games

Some well know board game reviewers have also thrown their weight behind this campaign to make board games accessible to the blind:

Everybody should get involved with this, absolutely amazing!” – Richard Ham of Rahdo Runs Through

We need to raise awareness and fund things like this Kickstarter…” – Undead Viking

The 64 Oz Games Kickstarter campaign is currently live and finishes on Thursday April 24 at 3pm, so if you would like to back the campaign or want to know more, go here:

Using Nurph for our chats

I have started running both #boardgamehour and #boardgamersask from the site www.nurph.com

For those of you who don't want to use this site it makes not difference, everything works the same, but those who do will tend to find the experience even better than before.
There are three big upsides to Nurph for us:

  • It has spam filters, so lots of spam does not get through.. If any does we tell @nurph and they sort it (or at least they did last week)
  • It add the hashtag for you! No more forgetting..
  • We can watch it back in real time and for ever.. Twitter drops the information quick quickly, but Nurph allows us to watch it back when ever we like.. Go here and click view reply to see what I mean http://nurph.com/BoardGameHour/chats/153
So that is why we will be mentioning @nurph every now and then :0)

#boardgamersask - Colby Dauch

"If you have a plaid hat and you want some fun, ask Colby!"
If you recognise that phrase then you are officially a Doug like me. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you have a treat in store when you get to ask questions of the owner and chief game designer at Plaid Hat games, Colby Dauch.
Wednesday March 12th - 2pm (EST), 7pm(GMT) - is your chance to ask question of the man behind these great titles:

And that is not all.. Plaid Hat are working with Rob Daviau on the next "legecy" style game, Seafall!
If you have ever listened to the plaid hat podcast, you will understand when I promise you one thing with this #boardgamersask and this is that it will be entertaining!

Making #boardgamersask easier!

To make this live Twitter Q&A easier, I have made a room on Nurph.com which we can all use. All you have to do is make sure you are logged into Twitter then go to http://nurph.com/BoardGamersAsk/chats/166 and log in, using your Twitter account. You don't have to use this, everything will be the same as normal, but if you do us Nurph, it acts like a chat room for twitter and add the Hashtag automatically  :0)

So What is #Boardgamersask?

#BoardGamersAsk is a live Twitter event, were you the board gaming community can ask questions of industry insiders.

So the big question is how does #BoardGamersAsk work?
